The Search for the Best...Cheeseburger (pt. 3 )

rmill.jpgNever let it be said that Seattlest isn't a tad bit obsessive. The lengths we are now going to in order to find the best cheeseburger in Seattle is leading us into areas of the city some might say are better left undiscovered.

Not to mention the fact that our chloresterol is higher than average and we're beginning to get a tad nervous about the whole 'Mad Cow' thing.

On the other hand, we've eaten at some kickass burger joints. For every gray cloud...

Today, we compare two mainstays in the Seattle burger scene: Capitol Hill's Deluxe Bar & Grill and the now-mythical Red Mill Burger. But before going to the tale of the tape, let's answer the question we've been asked of late. Why cheeseburgers?

Well, it's because Seattlest believes that the cheeseburger is the quintessential American food. Ground beef on bread was brought over by immigrants, but it was Americans who learned how to perfect it, both in taste and marketing.

Not too mention that a city without a good cheeseburger can barely be considered to be a city. But hey, we're a tad biased.

On to the report below the jump:

Bun: A standard yellow sesame-seed bun was had at the Deluxe. Buttered, but not toasted. An untoasted bun is a very sad bun.

At the Red Mill, a white sesame seed bun...toasted. Guess who get's the better score?

Deluxe - 4 / Red Mill - 8

Meat: The Deluxe burger was okay. Very moist, in part due to the fact that they took my order of "Medium" and served us a "Rare." Points for asking us how we liked our burger done, but minus points for cooking and serving it incorrectly.

At the Red Mill the burger was fried with additional seasoning, a first in our travels we might add. It was a very delicious burger.

Deluxe - 6 / Red Mill - 8

Burger/Bun Ratio: The ratio on the Deluxe burger was good being neither too meaty nor too much bun.

Red Mill's cheeseburger was a little more bun than burger, but not offensively so.

Deluxe - 8 / Red Mill - 7

Cheese: At the Deluxe, the cheese was not even unexceptional, it just downright horrible. No taste, and when we bit into the burger, we couldn't even tell it was a cheeseburger.

Red Mill however had a thick, gooey slice of American cheese. We won't take off points for the American (Seattlest prefers cheddar), as the cheese itself was tangy and very apparent when we bit into the burger.

Deluxe - 2 / Red Mill - 8

Misc.: Ugh. typically I like Garlic Fries, but the Deluxe served them to us cold. Nothing ruins a burger more than cold fries. The rest of the burger? The standard lettuce, tomato, and red onion trifecta.

At the Red Mill, the burger is topped with their "Red Mill" Sauce, a homemade mayonnaise with a smokey taste to it. It adds so much to the burger, even if Seattlest doesn't typically like mayo on their burgers. Add to this that Red Mill has a large milkshake menu, and well, the Red Mill wins this part hands down, as it's as perfect as a restaurant can provide. Any place that gives its condiments heavy thought deserves a perfect score.

Deluxe - 3/ Red Mill - 10

Overall scores? Do we even need to add them up? Red Mill wins in a walk, 8.2 to 4.6
