Local Cartoonist Show at Glo’s Doesn’t Blow

mini-RO-3.web.jpgSeattlest made a quick stop at Glo’s diner on Capitol Hill this first weekend of May to enjoy the hipster eatery’s third exhibition of weird comics art by local cartoonist and regular Stranger illustrator David Lasky, best known to comic book nerds as one-half of the creative team behind the award nominated (but not winning) comic book series Urban Hipster.

Lasky is even less well known for his creepy, soft-spoken “Slide Rule” performances at the Richard Hugo House and various other points Seattle, including one unforgettable rendition of Al Pacino as the Moon, read from Lasky’s comic strip of the same name. A short video of said performance, which is every bit as R-rated and no more office-friendly than the real Al Pacino himself, comes highly recommended.

The show now up at Glo’s includes original Lasky work excerpted from and in promotion of the 80-page comics anthology Moxie, My Sweet, by the Seattle based cartoonist collective Fine Comix. This second volume of Moxie features work written by Seattle cartoonist Mark Campos and illustrated in a confusing variety of styles by a sordid cast of local cartoonists.

The Glo’s exhibit includes such memorable strips as “Ramble On!” which unites the enchanting music of fantasy rock gods Led Zeppelin with the equally enchanting fantasy classic Lord of the Rings, which, as any nerd can tell you, was a huge influence on the seminal rock band’s lyrical content.

Seattlest recommends returning to Glo’s on a day when you have more time, wait in line for a table and spend actual money on their food services like a good citizen and enjoy the work on display at a more leisurely pace than Seattlest did. After stuffing yourself on their recommended french toast and scones, utilize the forces of gravity to pull you down Olive Way, then toward Confounded Books at 315 East Pine Street where you may purchase your own personal copy of Moxie, My Sweet. Failing that, you can find the book available on the Fine Comix website.

Glo’s is located at 1621 East Olive Way and is open daily from 7am to 4pm. The show is up from May 1 thru June 26. (Local trivia note: this show is the final exhibit organized by Glo’s long-time curator Henry Chamberlain.)
