826 Seattle Book Sale

826.gifBuy a book & give a warm welcome to the latest incarnation of Dave Eggers’s non-profit writing/tutoring organization, 826 Seattle.

Dave Eggers, noted author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and founder of the revered indie publishing house McSweeney’s, poured money from his early literary success into the writing/tutoring center 826 Valencia in San Francisco. The landlord insisted they sell something on the property, so they opened a Pirate Supply store as the front for the writing lab. The students drop in for peg legs & eye patches. And behind the pirate store front?  They find one-on-one attention in creative writing, English as a second language, and grammar. Beyond tutoring, the organization offers workshops, field trips, and even classroom help. The success of the San Francisco center inspired 826NYC in Brooklyn, whose store front is Super Hero supplies. Now 826 is expanding to Chicago & our very own Seattle.

So what will Seattle’s store be? Rumor says space travel supplies. Cool. Seattlest can’t wait to try on a space suit and munch on astronaut ice cream as we head into the writing center to volunteer.

This Saturday 826 Seattle is hosting a book sale to benefit their organization.

Saturday May 7th
Wallingford Center
10am-6pm
