K-Rock Is Off the Air

mini-radio.jpgAs far as Seattlest is concerned there are two stops on the FM dial: NPR and KEXP. We count ourselves pretty lucky to have that. Word is that some people actually listen to other stuff, though. We know, amazing. People do listen to those areas of the band we refer to as "fly-over frequencies."

Apparently one of the things that people who could remember more than two numbers used to listen to was K-Rock 96.5, uh, alternative oldies or something like that under the Infinity umbrella. In a move typical of a megacorp like Infinity, K-Rock abruptly stopped broadcasting recently and is currently filling the dead air with movie clips and Don Henley hits.

Popular K-Rock morning DJ Andy Savage reports on his website:

Andy, Steve, Jodi & Ron want to apologize to everyone who made us their first choice every morning. We sincerely wish we could have said something on the air to let you know what was going on but we had no idea. It came as quite a shock to us. All we can say is please check this site again soon, we shall return to a radio near you...in the meantime, browse the site and check out the cool things we've done with many of you in the past year! And thanks for your patience...

Radio personality and champion against the ClearChannelification of the radio dial Lisa Wood commented in her blog Friday about the switch to the Jack FM format:

Everything I've heard about it sounds horrible. It's basically a radio station in a can, all put together some where else. They call it a "play what we want" format, but the fact that there are no DJs makes that a little hard, doesn't it? Doesn't that mean the entire day is still completely pre-scheduled and automated?

The JackFM format isn't quite DJ-less. They just don't take requests as far as I understand. Being in Vancouver, we had the same thing when our KISS FM died (soft rockish) and played christmas music for two months and then emerged as JACK and stole the morning radio hosts from another station. Now they're number one in Vancouver.

I hate the station, but it's not really that different from any other station out there; there's still DJs and still a fair amount of talk, they just don't have scheduled shows like 90's at noon or countdown shows and the like.
