There are a plethora of local sporting events this weekend--one could even construct a little sports day, if so inclined. It's going to be too nice to have a weather-related excuse to watch the NFL draft. Actually, there is no excuse for watching the NFL draft. So here's the Seattlest picks:
9am--UW Crew vs. California, at the Montlake Cut. The Huskies and Golden Bears have been competing annually since 1903 to determine which school's students can propel a boat at a faster rate of speed. There are races approximately every ten minutes, with the last race, between the #2-ranked Cal and #3-ranked UW men's varsity eights, at 10:20. You can watch the races from anywhere on the Montlake Cut, like on the Montlake Bridge or down the stairs on either side of it.
12:45pm--UW Football Spring Game, at Husky Stadium. Unless you sneak in to Husky Stadium like Seattlest did in high school, this is your chance to visit the country's most beautiful setting for college football, free. You can even park for free. The annual spring game is a scrimmage that marks the end of spring practice. If you go, watch the play of the four quarterbacks--they are in a wide-open battle for the starting job.
3pm-7pm--Plenty of time for traditional Saturday duties: call Mom, clean the bathroom, buy milk, etc. We know you can't watch sports all day.
7:30pm--Seattle vs. Sacramento, game 1 of the first round playoff series. Sharp-shooter Vladimir Radmanovic says he's recovered from a broken leg and ready to play on Saturday, a huge boost to the Sonics. Only a few tickets remain, but the game will be on ESPN.
