All the Reel Grrls

Seattlest has been looking forward to the opening of Central Cinema since we first heard of its existence-to-be a year ago. Kevin Spitzer's idea for a restaurant-cum-theater just plain appeals to us, especially since he's planning to feature movie-themed menus, like truffles accompanying Chocolat or spicy noodles with Tampopo. If the chefs are able to recreate that amazing meal from Big Night, Seattlest will be one contented food/film lover.

The bad news: While the kitchen and restaurant are nearing completion, there's no full food service until this May. (Incidentally, if you're looking for a restaurant job, they're hiring). The good news: Sans food, Central Cinema hopes to whet your cultural appetite with some pre-opening events, including two this weekend.

First up, tonight at 8pm is Girls in the Director's Chair: A Screening of Videos Produced by Young Women, a night of short films sponsored by Reel Grrls, a local after-school media and technology training organization for teenage girls. These videos were made by recent graduates of the Reel Grrls' Media Program, a four month course in filmmaking mentored by professional women in the media industry. The official word is that this evening's video selections will explore "American adolescence to question how young women are portrayed in the media and its effect upon [their] daily lives." The producers will host an audience discussion directly following the screening. Tickets are $5, or free if you are (or can pass for) a youth.

Saturday night (also at 8pm; $8) is A Tribute to the Harlem Renaissance presented by the Verbal Rhythms Arts Collective. The works of Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Countee Cullen will all be featured. Also on the docket: hip hop by Sons of Hagar and a vocal performance by Toya Williams. Apparently, there's going to be free giveaways all night and a tribute to the recently departed Ossie Davis, as well as a "drumming circle." Because nothing says National Poetry Month like a (*shudder*) drum circle. Langston Hughes would be proud.

Central Cinema is located in the Central District (natch): 1411 21st Ave.
