Dissecting Grey's Anatomy: Premiere Edition

It's not so often we get the chance to relish in the national promotion of our city, enjoy a little quality time with our tv sets and shamelessly force the name of our once and future crush into a post. (Ahem,  Patrick Dempsey.) Which is why Seattlest is proud to bring you this weekly feature on ABC's new medical drama, Grey's Anatomy. One part recap, one part rant, one part unabashed lovefest...wait, how many parts is that? Regardless, just read. And watch.

greys2.jpgOne night stands, dead patients, bosses from hell and backstabbing new friends. It's all in a day's work at Seattle Grace Hospital. Sure the name is fictional, but the melodrama? That's all real. Grey's Anatomy premiered Sunday night and has all the makings of a hit. Well, an ABC hit anyway. Punny double entendre title? Check--it's a seminal medical book and the main character's name! Sticking with a winning formula? Check--it's equal parts  ER's drama and Scrubs' unexpected humor. Workplace microcosm in metropolitan city? Check--medical students becoming surgical residents in Seattle. But let's get one thing straight: this ain't Dark Angel's simulated hometown. Grey's actually bothered to film a few scenes here. Granted, they were mostly obligatory shots of the Space Needle, the ferry, the rain and the, uh,  KOMO News 4 helicopter landing pad (in a special guest appearance as the hospital roof--hooray for corporate synergy!).  But hey--it's better than another show using our hockey-loving neighbors to the north as a second-rate stand in.

So you're hooked, right? But you didn't quite happen to catch the show? Here's all you need to know:  cute newbie resident unknowingly sleeps with her boss the night before her first day. Add some in-the-trenches camaraderie, a sassy supervisor (with a heart of gold), forbidden love and some surgical close-ups and what do you get? A spot on the couch next Sunday night.

  • I work across the street from Fisher Plaza (the Komo4 building) and I think I saw them filming a couple of weeks ago. There was a red helicopter that was hovering around Belltown for at least an hour during lunch time. Clearly not a medical emergency. Or, if it was, I'd be suing.

  • I had really intended # on doing something like this, but the Carnivale season finale and waiting for Grey's Anatomy to arrive by bittorrent got in the way.

  • Here is hoping it is more Seattle based than Fraiser. I hate that damn show. It is a fictional LA/New York Myth of Seattle.

At least there was the movie Singles.
