You for City Council
Maybe we’re taking our democracy for granted. I mean after all we live in a country where we can vote for whoever we want to, be it a Yale-educated male millionaire or a taller Yale-educated male millionaire. However, looking at this fall’s civic elections there are still three races where, as of now, we will have no choice in the matter.
City Council Members Jan Drago, Nick Licata, and City Attorney Tom Carr are all running unopposed. Now, far be it from us to suggest that they pick up opponents just so we have more to write about this summer. We are only worried about the state of democracy in our city.
Since no one else is stepping up, why don’t you?
Even as you read this incumbents are raising money and working on legislation to tout, but you shouldn’t let that scare you off. If you run you not only get your picture in the voter’s guide (which is mailed to like, everyone) but you also get to attend and speak at the hundreds of candidate forums held all over the city. From Crown Hill to Mt. Baker you’ll be in every one of Seattle’s community center basements, talking to concerned citizens about the issues.
If you’re interested but unsure who to run against, here are your options:
Drago is seeking her fourth term on the council. She is currently the council’s president and has worked to help small businesses in the city.
Licata is running for his third term on the council. He is seen as the council’s most liberal member and has been an activist in the community since the late 1970s.
Tom Carr succeeded Mark Sidran in 2001 and has a law degree.
You have until July 29 to file, and once elected you get a fancy office, your own staff, and free reign of the city. Plus, as long as you don’t take campaign contributions from strip club owners, you could possibly hold the job for years. As with any foray into public life before be sure to consult your family and loved ones first.
