Weedman in Town

Seattlest is pleased to post a late-breaking theatrical suggestion from our friend Rachel.

Seattlest is eager to check out Lauren Weedman’s show Wreckage (The Rewrite) this weekend. If you don’t already know, Lauren’s a one-time Seattle girl who takes chapters of her life and turns them into hysterically funny, almost uncomfortably voyeuristic one-woman shows. She’s perfected that prized solo performer skill of re-creating the chatter and mannerisms of an animated dinner party, with her as all eight people, just as crisp as you please. It slays us.

The reason Weedman’s shows are so satisfying isn’t just because she can convey a slew of eerily familiar characters all jiving each other. It’s how bold and (we hesitate to say) honest she is digging in to her life to smack the material down in the first place. This woman turns what could have been costly therapy interlude into a very entertaining evening.

We hesitate on the honesty bit just because it also turns out that Weedman is a big fat liar. Honest, that’s what the show’s about. Wreckage revolves around said lie (a real doozy), which Weedman told in college, and the resulting ripples it sends through her life.

The Shunpike Collective is presenting Wreckage at the East Hall Theatre at 1525 10th Avenue. The show runs March 24-27. Saturday shows 7 and 10pm, Sunday show at 7pm. Info and reservations 206-706-3710.
